In law, there is the accused and the victim. In life, it’s not that simple….
The Victim is a character driven thriller played out across two time-frames through the eyes of the plaintiff and the accused. Set within Scotland’s unique legal system, the show asks: who is really ‘the victim’?
What if… You’re a twenty eight year old family man working hard to make ends meet. Then from nowhere a random, unprovoked assault results in you sustaining serious head injuries with all kinds of implications for the future. But it turns out that the attack is worse than random… Actually, you’ve been identified online as a notorious murderer - and in the digital age, mud sticks…
In a world of where there is no smoke without fire, should Craig Myers (James Harkness) hide away and wait for the smoke to clear - or try to prove his innocence? Is he a convicted child killer, or the tragic victim of mistaken identity?
But what if… Your nine year old son was murdered fifteen years ago by a then fourteen-year old boy. You don’t believe justice was done and have campaigned to be told of the killer’s new identity and whereabouts, partly out of a belief that it is your right to know if he could pass you in the street. But you’ve been let down by every agency, who make the evil monster that wrecked your life out to be the victim. Kelly Macdonald plays Anna Dean, the grieving mother who is accused of revealing the identity of her son’s killer online and conspiring to have him murdered. Has the anger of a grieving mother turned her into a criminal? What is she capable of doing in her son’s name?
The Victim follows the progress of a trial at Edinburgh’s High Court, while also covering the events leading up to the criminal investigation, led by Detective Inspector Steven Grover (John Hannah), who has his own personal reasons for wanting to crack the case.
Craig and Anna are pitted against each other, but our sympathies will be divided. New potential suspects will be revealed and long buried secrets unearthed as the story builds to a final, devastating climax.
