It's the ultimate test of the human voice!
The Naked Choir is a brand new series following host Jeff Hunkin, on the search to find New Zealand's most entertaining, a cappella singing group.
This series demands performances from groups that are a cappella, aka the "naked" voice (i.e. without any sort of accompaniment, instruments or backing track), and aims to take gifted amateurs and transform them into rounded, impressive and polished performers.
A casting team has scoured New Zealand for the most gifted vocal harmony and a cappella groups, recruiting across musical genres - from gospel to barbershop; doo wop to hip hop.
After extensive, nationwide auditions, eight groups have been selected, based on musical ability and the extent to which they represent not just a good range of musical genres, but also the diverse mix of communities across New Zealand.
Each episode follows these groups as they prepare and rehearse, then come together in a performance venue to sing-off against one
As part of this, the teams are all mentored by Jeff - a well qualified man for the job. Jeff is the tenor from the award-winning barbershop quartet Musical Island Boys; a member of barbershop a cappella group FX; a vocal coach and mentor; as well as a Communications and Community Advisor for TradeMe by day.
The Naked Choir also calls on the assistance of specialists in various musical fields, including mentors: Igelese Ete (a composer on Disney's Moana), Ravil Atlas and Clare Martin.
Also in the audience for the sing-offs are The Naked Choir Jury - a judging panel of three, tasked with deciding which group is to be eliminated. The Jury are: Matt Gifford, Lizzie Marvelly and John Rosser.
