Reggie Yates Specials

Acclaimed specials from Reggie Yates, exploring two of the most extreme cultures on earth.

Reggie Yates: Extreme South Africa

It has been 20 years since the first free elections in South Africa, and in the shadow of Nelson Mandela’s death Reggie Yates gets up close and personal with three very different communities in contemporary South Africa. By living with them for seven challenging days, Reggie Yates discovers both the real heart of this misunderstood country and himself.

Reggie Yates is immersing himself in these three very different worlds to explore the issues facing his generation in Africa right now, issues you might never normally associate with the continent.

So is ‘7 Days With…’, enough time for Reggie to get his head round the crazy contradictions of Africa today?

In the second instalment of this three part series, Reggie witnesses first hand the effect of knife crime as he scrubs up to join the junior doctors in a Cape Town hospital.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world and the Cape Flats, outside Cape Town, are now the epicentre of violent crime in the country. Reggie spends a week in a brand new district hospital in the fastest growing township,  struggling to cope with the victims of these attacks.

On any given weekend, the young doctors deal with up to 100 stabbings and assaults and 80% of those admitted are under 25 years old. By living and working with the doctors and patients in this hospital, Reggie tries to find out why it’s almost inevitable for young men, just like him, to get into violent scrapes here.

It’s a journey that’ll lead him into the heart of the township and the conflict.

Reggie Yates: Extreme Russia

First port-o-call for Reggie is Moscow, where he meets some of the country’s most dangerous people – the nationalists.

With Vladimir Putin flexing his muscles and squaring up to the West, Reggie arrives in the Russian capital only days before the ‘Russian March, where thousands of ultra-nationalists take to the streets in a show of strength and unity.  Reggie immerses himself into their world where patriotism and loving your country is becoming the norm … a norm that has very dangerous consequences.

He trains with knife wielding far right nationalists, talks to the young artists who idolise Putin and confronts teenage neo-Nazis who believe that if you’re not white then you have no place in Russia.

Reggie also meets the non-Russians who live in fear of persecution and hears horrific stories of those who have survived vicious racist attacks.

And with the rise of the far right not just in Russia but across many other Western countries, including the UK, Reggie poses the question ‘Is this what can happen when you love your country too much?’

Welcome to Russia.

In the second instalment of this three part series, Reggie finds out what life is really like for young people in what has been described as the hardest place in Europe to be gay, a year after the introduction of the controversial anti-propaganda law.

Catch episode two of Reggie Yates: Extreme Russia, Wednesday 6 June, 10.10 on DUKE.
