Life Inside Jail

With unprecedented access to one of New York’s largest jails, Life Inside Jail reveals the reality of life in the American prison system.

In America, before you are convicted of any crime, you are sent to one of the nation’s 3,000 county jails. Conditions are seriously tough – innocent people mix with petty thieves, serial killers and violent gang members while they wait for their cases to go to court. All are locked up together in a melting pot of boredom and frustration.

Filmed over 6 months, this two-part series features the stories of Albany County Jail’s inmates, both male and female, as well as the officers charged with keeping order.

In the opening episode, Correctional Officers are challenged by the arrival of seven senior gangsters transferred from New York’s most notorious prison, Rikers Island. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old ‘straight A-student’, Michael Chmielewski, is arrested for the murder of a local hairdresser following a break-in that went wrong; and heroin addict, and motherof four, Tammy Lord tries to go clean.

The series provides a remarkable personal, emotional and intimate insight into a world behind bars. Love, pride, guilt, honour, loss and helplessness, this is human life pushed to its limits.
